It does work for me! APPLES ~ 9.24.08

Today's tip came to me out my need to find something to satiate the hunger of the little monkeys whilst I go about my errands and gather the rest of the Costain brood. This also helps to sustain them a bit longer so that when I do arrive home, I can get lunch whipped up and not have crazy, screaming children begging me for food!

Here is what you need to bring with you in the car:
I added some extra apples to this photo shoot so the one lovely apple wouldn't feel all lonely and scared. That apple corer/slicer does look rather mean and cold, doesn't he?

It is FALL and it is the start of APPLE season, (hooray!!!) so this is the perfect solution to my quandry. What can I give the little guys while I drive from MOPS/Bible Study/Target to pick up the Maxinator at Preschool?
Crackers are too crumby; pretzels work in a pinch (I always have a bag of Honey Wheats in the car for emergencies); chips... NEVER! ha ha ha

No, I wanted something that would take them awhile to munch on, that was healthy, portable and delicious!

APPLES it is!

Now, if you're wondering why I don't just cut the darn thing at home before I leave... well, you should know the answer to that. Apples brown and don't look as appealing to you young "looks are everything" crowd. I have tried lemon juice but seriously, this tip I'm describing works.

Just throw an apple, your slicer thingy and maybe a plate to slice on (I did do that yesterday) and you're ready to go.

Hunger be gone!

ps. As with all foods and young children, you must be aware of the possibility of choking. I am aware of that and find that apples are much better choice in my car than say those NASTY balloons they try to pawn off on me everytime I go to the grocery store. At least they ask me if I'd like one for the kids and I always, politely say, "no thank you".

pps. The apples pictured above are the most juicy, crisp and sweet apples you'll ever taste. If you have the opportunity... do yourself a favor and buy some Honeycrisps. You'll certainly thank me for it, although your pocketbook may not. Rest assured, it's money well spent and they don't stick around forever in the season so go get 'em now!

You know, I have one of those apple slicers and don't get much use out of it. I never thought of taking it on the go! You are right--nice, freshly-sliced apples are much more appealing to little kids.

Fantastic idea! My kids LOVE apples, but one hates to get skin in her teeth (picky, picky) and the other has a mouth full of loose teeth. I actually found my forgotten slicer doo dad in the drawer last week! Great idea!

Great tip! We use our apple slicer all the time. A new development around here - my kids will FINALLY eat apple skins. I've discovered an apple corer so I just core an apple and the kids bring them along. They'll eat the entire apple and they love the hole in the middle.

OH my - Honeycrisps are my all time favorite. I love finding them in the grocery store. For a year round apple I usually go with Fuji. If it's not crunchy, it's not good!

For a moment there I thought I already commented and I was thinking, "OH DEAR I AM SPENDING TOO MUCH TIME ON THESE BLOGS. I CAN'T EVEN REMEMBER COMMENTING ANYMORE! But, alas, it was another Rebecca.

I like apples if they are in: apple pie, apple cobbler, or apple dumplings. Or those apple flavored Hostess pies....

And I wonder where Noah gets his affinity for the sweets!!!!

If you do pre-slice them, try sprinking them with plain cinnamon. It's yummy and either keeps them from turning or makes you unable to tell - I'm not sure which! This is what I do for lunches. My kids love it.

I love those apples. Discovered them last year and used them for everything. Good idea for moms on the go too.

Thank you for sharing! I'm going to find my apple cutter and stash it in the car. I sure could have used it today!
